Program Description

Event Details

On a warm Halloween Eve, October 30, 1938, Orson Welles turned six seconds of radio silence—dead air—into absolute horror. With only a small wave of his hands, Welles called for radio silence in the CBS studio at the end of the broadcast. This creative decision sparked a panic among millions of people who ran screaming, grabbed their shotguns, drove off in cars, and hid anywhere they could find to get away from Martians intent on exterminating humanity. In only six seconds, the way the world would view media was changed forever. Come to the library to hear about Welles' infamous broadcast and the larger implications it had on society.
