Immigrants and ICE: How To Protect Your Rights & Your Children

Attorney Martin Coonen and colleagues will host a community meeting on the legal rights of immigrants in the event of an ICE raid. The meeting is free to attend and will be held in the library's lower level. There are no costs or fees for any services at the program. This presentation will be in both English and Spanish. The program will cover the following topics:

1. Inform people of their rights at work and home in the event immigration authorities arrive.
     A. What is a warrant
     B. When do ICE need a warrant
     C. What to do if approached by ICE
     D. Private and public spaces, and how your rights are different in each
     E. How to be ready and how to help the community

2. Explain and assist in completing short term and standby guardianship papers to provide for children in the event parents are detained.
     A. How to prepare papers so friend or family can care for your children if you are detained
     B. Short term guardianship – no need for court, up to a year
     C. Standby guardianship – at the end of a year, need court to continue
     D. Why we recommend both types
     E. We will have one or more lawyers able to assist you in completing paperwork free of charge

3. Answer questions and help folks feel less alone and adrift

The presenters are able to speak in basic Spanish. No registration is required.

El abogado Martin Coonen y sus colegas organizarán una reunión comunitaria sobre los derechos legales de los inmigrantes en caso de una redada de ICE. La asistencia a la reunión es gratuita y se llevará a cabo en la planta baja de la biblioteca. Los servicios del programa son gratuitos. Esta presentación se realizará tanto en inglés como en español. El programa cubrirá los siguientes temas:

1. Informar a las personas sobre sus derechos en el trabajo y el hogar en caso de que lleguen las autoridades migratorias.
     A. ¿Qué es una orden judicial? 
     B. ¿Cuándo necesita ICE una orden judicial?
     C. Qué hacer si ICE se comunica con usted.
     D. Espacios privados y públicos: cómo difieren sus derechos en cada uno.
     E. Cómo estar preparado y cómo ayudar a la comunidad.

2. Explicar y ayudar a completar los documentos de tutela a corto plazo y de reserva para proteger a los niños en caso de que sus padres sean detenidos.
     A. Cómo preparar la documentación para que un amigo o familiar pueda cuidar de sus hijos si lo detienen
     B. Tutela a corto plazo: sin necesidad de juicio, hasta un año
     C. Tutela de reserva: al cabo de un año, se requiere juicio para continuar   
     D. Por qué recomendamos ambos tipos
     E. Contaremos con uno o más abogados que le ayudarán a completar la documentación gratuitamente

3. Responder preguntas y ayudar a las personas a sentirse menos solas y a la deriva
